The Fight-or-Flight-or-Freeze Response was once an appropriate way for prehistoric humans to survive a hostile environment. Perceiving a threat, our brains activated our sympathetic nervous system, flooding the body with chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline in preparation to do battle with, or, out run, a threatening situation such as being eaten by a sabre toothed tiger. The Fight-or-Flight-or-Freeze Response is still a very necessary part of our physiology and helps us to react quickly when we need to protect ourselves or a loved one. In fact, not all stress is harmful and we can experience positive stress (or ‘eustress,’) which is the ability to anticipate exciting and challenging events.

The problem, however, is that we are constantly being bombarded with perceived stress stimuli, to the point where even THINKING ABOUT AN IMAGINARY THREAT will trigger the Fight-or-Flight-or-Freeze Response.
